This genus is the second largest but most hybridized and cultivated genus in the bromeliad family... with 200 species...

These are medium size, mostly epiphytic plants with soft or firm, variously green but often spotted, blotched or distinctly marked leaves. The inflorescences are usually long-lasting with yellow, green or white flowers in brightly colored bracts. The inflorescences may be upright like a spear, pendulous or even curved.


They found in forested and rocky areas in Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, and South America. The usual one is Vriesea splendens with its all-red, sword-like flower-head. Other types generally have more spreading flower-heads. Some species are grown for their foliage ...
