This genus is the second largest but most hybridized and cultivated genus in the bromeliad family... with 200 species...
These are medium size, mostly epiphytic plants with soft or firm, variously green but often spotted, blotched or distinctly marked leaves. The inflorescences are usually long-lasting with yellow, green or white flowers in brightly colored bracts. The inflorescences may be upright like a spear, pendulous or even curved.
